pierre bastien is a french legend that has collaborated with artists such as robert wyatt, jac berrocal and jaki liebezeit, to name just a few. he is also very well known for his compositions based on home-made mechanical instruments, designed and constructed by bastien himself. pure diy. using these instruments he would create a heady experimental mix incorporating poetry and some far-out music, all in all very intriguing and original indeed. needless to say when the notion of pierre bastien and versatile records potentially making a project together arose, it was a total honour! throw into the mix esteemed electro-acoustic composer eddie ladoire and now we ve really got something interesting. eddie and pierre met when they appeared on the same concert bill together and they decided to collaborate further with versatile being the platform for the fruits of this particular project. the original version of phantom dance is a beautiful piece where bastien plays a trumpet into some water blended with electronic drums and mellow organs lines, creating an otherworldly, subterranean jazz vibe for the freaks. suzanne kraft, the la native / amsterdam based producer turns the original into some mechanical broken funk vibes while rotterdam s oceanic delivers 2 fresh, reimagined versions. one for for the club with a strong afro beat feel while the other one is a slower affair for the after hours. both mixes bringing something new to the table. a truly original and interesting release from some very talented people, for those with open ears and open minds!

a1/ guehi jean pantalon s craqué guéhi jean is a key figure of ivorian music and many of his records mixing funk, jazz and afrobeat are sought after nowadays. having left africa in order to make it in france, he recorded this digital afrobeat hit in paris, then went back to his native country where he died in 2012. despite his talent, guéhi jean didn t get the recognition he deserved.

b1/ jean-michel gascuel s dominus this french composer who collaborated with pierre schaeffer was also a great lyricist working for the likes of vivian vee or suzy andrews, and a fashion designer. with its latin touch, this track is a little ufo standing out of the rest of his french productions, so let us be blessed by dominus domine dominarum.
b2/michel robidoux les planètes this track by composer michel robidoux featured on a kidisk with a book called -visitons les planètes avec goldorak- and was released in canada in 1980. this incredible space jam was chosen as a macaroon for this new ep – our tribute to an amazing composer who wrote more than 325 songs and even collaborated with leonard cohen.

originally released in 1976 ‘see the light’ was eddie russ’ 2nd album and has been issued here with superb sound quality. ‘zaius’ is a magical track that has retained its popularity and one of the genre’s best ever track – a jazz dancer’s delight! the uptempo cover of ewf ‘see the light’ really kicks and ‘poko nose’ is another funk groove oriented track, whilst ‘stop it now’ is a disco dancer. classic, essential jazz funk.

originally release in 1978 this fresh new press sounds amazing and will be a welcome addition to the collection of those into seminal jazz funk albums. ‘take a look at yourself’ is a powerhouse jazz funk dancer featuring jackie holiday, who also does a great job of ‘don’t ask my neighbours’. ‘i heard that’ is a rare groove monster cover of quincy’s track, and ‘tea leaves’ and ‘i want to be somebody’ are also big dancers.

new andres 12inch debut on his own label la vida. andres is one that really needs no introduction, but for those unfamiliar here it is: andres, aka dj dez, is one of detroits unsung heros of underground music. since the late 90s andres has built up an extremely respectable catalog of that blurs the boundaries between genres, most notably his records on kdj and mahogani music. not to forget, dj dez is also slum villages dj, has recorded many hip hop instrumental on hipnotech records, and his hand is on countless other detroit records. definitely one of the most consistent producers we’ve got here whose music can be summed up in one word: quality!

recorded on september 10, 1964, prior to his well-known association with john coltrane, this eponymous album (later renamed pharoahs first) is the debut release of the iconic tenor saxophonist. (yes, there are some spelling oddities here: the artist birth name ferrell only later changed the spelling from the standard pharaoh to the more personalized pharoah.) with one foot in mainstream jazz – pianist jane getz had played with charles mingus and the other, tentatively at times, in the avant-garde, this is a fascinating glimpse of sanders’ style before he wielded the unremitting fierceness of his playing with coltrane and the modal mysticism of his later solo albums on impulse. interestingly, in recent years he has deployed a more polished version of this sort of vant-flavored bop, bringing his career full circle and strongly suggesting that the hybrid heard here was not due to any failure of nerve on his debut but rather was the cornerstone of his conception. esp-disk has issued this album under three different covers, for its 21st-century reissue on vinyl, we have chosen to use the second and most beautiful. it is augmented with liner notes by a current esp-disk’ artist, tenor saxophonist ras moshe burnett of the red microphone, who can be heard accompanying amina baraka on their eponymous 2017 release.

in it’s original form waiting for you to call secured radio plays on 6 music, radio 1, jazz fm and various regional specialist shows, plus the track got playlisted on rinse fm. these remixes will appeal more to club djs and will fit in with house and nu-disco sets from a broad section of djs. it’s been a while since any artist has secured a remix from derrick carter and the hmd boys are thrilled that the world famous chicago dj has honoured them with a remix of their debut single - and he certainly doesn’t disappoint. dc is on top form here with his epic mid-tempo house interpretation that keeps the soul of the original track whilst giving it some extra dance floor dynamism. with nods to classic 90’s remixes from frankie knuckles and david morales this is one for the connoisseurs and ravers alike. the hmd boys with the help of luke solomon create a dubbed out and more pacy version of the original on the flip side with their remix and they report that it’s been going down a storm in their sets from output in new york to recent gigs in glasgow, berlin and manchester. with a brand new track featuring the vocals of amy douglas set for february and a radio 1 essential mix to be aired on december 23rd, the hmd sound is going from a steady canter to a gallop.

fouk might have been curating outplay since 2013, but their butterfunk ep is in fact the duos first proper ep on their own imprint. its not that theyve been resting on their laurels: they ve drip-fed a handful of eps on the likes of heist and house of disco over the past few years, and released solo efforts on kolour ltd and razor n tape that stormed the charts. it s been fascinating to see the dutch pair slowly break the mould, moving from heavy sampling in favour to an emphasis on original instrumentation and production. the butterfunk ep is fine showcase of their prowess in the studio, loaded to the hilt with contemporary dancefloor funk. things kick off with the rolling drums, off-beat percussion and seriously infectious hammond lines of organ freeman. title track butterfunk is aimed squarely at the hips with its smooth keys and perfectly placed vocal, while some acid lines give the track a little edge. flip over for the bumping wong way, a chunky workout with a rubber bassline. the finale of the ep is winter, a fantastic slice of 80s inspired downtempo mushroom jazz.

ben jacobs aka crackazat first made a name for himself when he was still living in bristol and released on ep on the city s futureboogie label, which has also signed music from the likes of julio bashmore, crazy p and outboxx. early in his career crackazat was also the official warm up act for an at the time up and coming artist called floating points, who now needs no introduction as one of the world s leading electronic music producers. moving to sweden shortly after the futureboogie release, crackazat made contact with the local talk owners mad mats and tooli, and after a couple of single/ep releases signed his debut solo album crescendo. the last couple of years crackazat has had an explosion of global popularity, which has led to playing gigs all over the world, and releasing tracks and remixes on labels ranging from josh wink s ovum, joey negro s z records and eureka in japan. classically trained with a strong jazz influence, crackazat has a distinctively individual sound that fuses funk with soulful vocals and the electronic bass music associated with his former home of bristol. eloquent and intelligent, rainbow fantasia is a masterpiece that showcases one of electronic music s most exciting talents.

nice price deal !!! born near the french border and growing up in the 90’s, dirk lamprecht aka dml developed a strange but even more so strong interest in hardcore-techno. but this style quickly became too limited for him and he adopted the sound of detroit, carl craig, kenny larkin and robert hood became the most influencial artists for him. over the years he became affiliated with an even greater spectrum of musical influences, ranging from all sorts of electronic music to jazz and even world music. in addition he graduated as an audio engineer and started to perform as a live act in 2002. more knowledge consequently leads to a much more diverse way of producing own tracks. in 2007 dirk lamprecht made his debut under his alias >dml< on the legendary label harthouse. his productions range from tribalistic via hypnotic, with a hint of detroit under his real name and from a touch of minimal, through melodramatic to straight techno under his alias dml

nice price deal !!! following our quest for inventive approaches within the sometimes tired and highly commodified house / tech house / techno / minimal or whatever you call it scene, we ve gone this time for landesvatter. regardless of having already signed a few full lenght lps on the highly esteemed normoton as well as on under_line and others, joachim landesvatter prefers to keep a low-key atittude. he offers us two great tracks, each one followed by a very special remix. the original of nome is a highly bouncy digitech house track for the dancefloor, with an infectious sinewave to keep you hooked from beggining to end. the remix of nome, in charge of arp aubert (marco niemerski aka tensnake & stephan lorenz) who run the great mirau musik, comes on the form of a hysterical dub house track that literally puts >the roof in the air<. we recommended for full effect to keep the volume on the red. as usual, the second half of the release follows at a quieter pace. hausse is a track on a out to lunch tradition, greatly influenced by detroit but at the same time distancing itself from the current plethora of nostalgics. in-house duo taron-trekka closes the package with a deep remix, rich on freaky jazz touches. we lack words to describe it.

some records are timeless and never age - -happiness is just around the bend- by the main ingredient is one of those records. originally released in 1974, -happiness- was a record before it s time - had it been released a year later it would undoubtedly have been one of the first 12- discs - so as a result, most discerning djs at the time chose to play the album cut. the song is actually a cover of uk prog-jazz band brian auger s oblivion express s version from the year before but main ingredient took the song to a whole new level and, 44 years later, it has become one of the most revered dance tunes of all-time. main ingredient were unlucky with 12- releases, which is why we re delighted to give -evening of love- it s first-ever 12- release! once again this was a 1981 album track which years later it would become a modern soul anthem and rightfully be regarded as one of their best records. fully remastered on limited edition 180 gram heavyweight vinyl.
